"Retreat is the act of returning to where you already are and being present in it."

Kyle is the CEO and principal architect of Primal Architects, a San Diego practice designing residential retreats across the American West. He earned his Master of Architecture at the University of New Mexico and his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies at Southern Illinois University.

Before founding Primal, Kyle spent over a decade working across education, commercial, mixed-use, and luxury residential sectors, delivering a portfolio of projects collectively valued at over $250 million. Through that work he learned that architecture is at its best when it responds to how we live and respects the place where it stands.

Primal is where that conviction turns into a way of building. The practice builds places where we can be present, shaped by the lives they hold and grounded by the landscape. A retreat, the way Kyle sees it, is something a person does as much as somewhere they go, and his work is to give form to that act.
